Sleep. Its something we all need, but most of us do not get enough of it. And because of that, we are always looking for new ways to make sure we are getting a good nights rest. I am going to share an important tip that I think almost everyone can benefit from: eating the right foods before bed CAN actually improve your sleep and metabolism. Let me break it down!

Going to bed hungry is one of the worst things that you can do, and it actually means that you could be burning lean muscle while you sleep. And you’re also likely to wake up starving….which triggers binge eating in the morning….meaning bad habits. To summarize, don’t go to bed hungry. That being said, you shouldn’t go to bed feeling too full either! Eating too much, or eating the wrong thing can also have a negative impact on your sleep.

Here are a list of foods that you should eat before bed, as well as the foods that you should avoid.

Foods to Avoid Right Before Bed:

-Coffee, Chocolate & Soda: all of these contain caffeine

-Sugary Foods: will make your blood sugar spike and crash

-Fatty Foods: pizza, burgers, fries all take longer for your body to process

-Spicy Foods: raise your body temperature- this makes you feel too hot when you sleep (super uncomfortable)

 

What to Eat Before Bed for Better Sleep:

-Kiwi: rich in vitamins and antioxidants, but also contains serotonin (sleep hormone)

-Spinach: full of sleep inducing nutrients, and is a light snack (won’t cause any digestive upset)

-Cherries: contain melatonin (naturally produced hormone in the body that signals its time for bed)

-Bananas: contain tryptophan, which helps create a calming mood

-Almonds: full of magnesium, which helps your muscles relax

-A Warm, Caffeine-Free Drink: a warm tea!
